The Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (MBA) is a professional body for marine scientists with some 1200 members world-wide. The MBA was established in 1884 and its laboratory overlooks Plymouth Sound. The MBA’s scientific staff of 50 undertake fundamental research in marine biology. The MBA hosts the National Marine Biological Library which is a national reference library and a major resource for research and education in marine biology. The old aquarium at the laboratory has been converted into a Marine Life and Environmental Sciences Resource Centre used for lectures, seminars and workshops. In 1998, the MBA initiated the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN) programme. MarLIN undertakes research to support marine environmental management protection and education and disseminates its information on the Internet. The MBA co-ordinates the Marine Environmental Change Network and the Marine Biodiversity and Climate Change (MarClim) programme.
