Metocean Operational Data Network

The UK Marine Information Council (UKMIC) has a key objective to promote the development of the UK’s capability in operational ocean monitoring and forecasting and has taken concrete steps to realise a metocean operational network for the UK.

A study was commissioned by UKMIC to consider the issues in developing a linked network of all existing and planned future operational oceanography networks. These are defined as networks that are collecting or providing data in real or near real time rather than access to data archives. The first stage of the study developed a website that contains a map to existing networks, a specification of the data services being provided, and details of how the networks are currently being operated http://www.ukmarine.org/metocean.

Stage 2 reviewed different scenarios of how the networks may be linked together with a view to providing greater benefits, in the future, to the network organisations and their customers. To read the full report please click below, or right click and select save as to save onto your computer:

Marine XML

Our management of the marine environment and marine risks is restricted by the lack of interoperability between the huge diversity of data formats, proprietary data management systems, numerical models and visualisation tools.

The aim of MarineXML is to demonstrate that eXtensible Mark-Up Language (XML) technology can be used to improve data interoperability for the marine community whilst not rendering investment in existing systems obsolete.

Major marine-related iniatives requiring data interoperability are GOOS/EuroGOOS and GMES.

Achieving Optimal Value from Publicly Funded Marine Information Resources

This paper was prepared with the objective of determining whether the UK achieves optimal value from secondary use of marine data and information obtained using public funds. To address this question the paper considers the UK policy framework, proceeds from the sale of publicly funded marine data and the likely impact of different pricing regimes on take up and use for commercial purposes.
